The Geometry of Giving: Fox Chapel Area High School Multiplies Our Impact

At Stephen’s Hulksters Angel Fund, we often talk about "strength" in terms of resilience. But this time, the Fox Chapel Area School District showed us a different kind of strength: the power of caring.

The Constant in the Equation

Amy Buches, Stephen’s mom, is a mother, coach and the engine of the Buches family. But to the students at Fox Chapel Area High School she is the math teacher who helps them solve for ‘x’ and navigate the complexities of a coordinate plane.

In the classroom, Amy teaches that every variable matters.  But this time it was her own school community that became the most important variable in our mission.  Proving that when a community adds its heart to a cause, the results are exponential.

A Proof of Kindness

The staff and students at Fox Chapel recently organized a fundraiser that serves as a beautiful ‘proof’ of the character and spirit of the people who make that school what it is. While we often look at numbers in a math problem, the true value of this contribution can’t be found in a simple sum. This generous donation from the Fox Chapel community shows what kind of people Amy gets to interact with every day.

Beyond the Classroom

Teaching is about more than just formulas.  It’s also about modeling.  This donation models the kind of empathy and generosity that makes good people great. By standing behind Amy and honoring Stephen’s legacy, the students and staff have demonstrated that kindness can have an exponential impact.  Not just on the families we serve, but also on the people in the foundation.  Having the support of the students and staff at Fox Chapel pushes us to work harder to meet the needs of these families who may not have the support that everyone has shown us.

To the Fox Chapel Area School District: Thank you for being a ‘plus’ in our story. You’ve shown us that when we work together, the impact is infinite.
